Paid for itself :UPDATED

 February 19, 2011
By J. Batte "Batteman87"

I have a Verizon iPhone 4 and ordered this from OtterBox before they were out at other retail stores. Fits great with no wiggle room inside. Great feeling case, doesn’t feel like it’s a fish and wants to jump right out of your hand. Easy access to all ports. The front pieces that protects the screen DOES NOT hinder any finger gestures what-so-ever. My OtterBox has paid for itself already when I had my hands full as I was getting out of the car and simply I forgot it was in my lap… after the solid hit to the cement and heart started beating again, I brought myself to assess the damage. There was NONE! Still works like a charm like it did right out of the box. No cracked screen/glass. The OtterBox is without a mark as well. OtterBox saved the day. I researched my purchase first and was sold when it protected an iPhone from a 23 store drop into concret. (Search YouTube). It’s better t protect your investment now or pay more later if it’s damaged.

EDIT: This OtterBox Defender still works like a Champ! I did want to update that it works for the Verizon iPhone 4…. NOT the new iPhone 4S. While the iPhone 4S fits in the case, Apple has moved the sensor and the phone will have screen brightness issues. For the iPhone 4S the OtterBox company has released a new Defender series that has a larger opening for the front and rear sensor/camera. It’s universal and will work with BOTH iPhone 4 & iPhone 4S on ALL CARRIERS.

Universal Design Fits Verizon iPhone 4 Perfectly

I have been searching for the Otterbox Defender specifically for the Verizon iPhone 4 and have yet to find it locally at any retail store. Since it is $50 at Otterbox directly (plus shipping) I waited until Amazon offered the universal design. I was hesitant as another reviewer said it did not fit the Verizon model. I believe that reviewer ordered it before the universal one was offered as this DOES FIT the Verizon iPhone. I tried the AT&T one in Best Buy and you are not able to mute the phone with that model unless you have microscopic fingers. This universal design fits the verizon phone perfectly and I have no trouble at all muting the phone.

I can’t attest to it’s durability yet as I only got it yesterday but it is a solid case and has screen protection as well.

Hope this helps if you are looking for a case for the Verizon iPhone.

Excellent protective case for Verizon iPhone 4 with some caveats.

First and foremost, if it’s solid protection you’re after (and if you’re prone to dropping your phone) you need a hard case for the iPhone because it’s made of glass. It’s a great phone functionally, but if you drop it as is, you’re done. Many have those slim, trendy skin cases but they will not protect the phone against a drop even if they look cool. Apple and Verizon don’t seem to be up front about how delicate the phone is.

I researched cases quite a bit and this one kept coming up. Highly protective, and it fits my Verizon phone perfectly. Make sure you get the UNIVERSAL case for Verizon so it fits. The built in screen protector is crystal clear and DOES NOT LEAVE watermarks or streaks like other cases with a built in screen do.

Now, some caveats: First, it’s a little tricky to put the case on if you attempt it without directions. It’s a plastic shell that snaps on and then the hard rubber gets wrapped around it. I strongly suggest you use the web video link that is printed on the inside of the box. Second, the flap on the bottom for the power jack was a little annoying at first. It took me a while to figure out how to seal it correctly. Lastly, this case WILL turn your phone into a brick. If you want something very slim that will maintain the aesthetics of the phone, this isn’t for you, but that’s a trade off you have to accept to have hardcore protection. I can fit it in my pocket, but it’s a project getting it in and out, and it’s a big lint collector. I’m thinking of trying a slimmer case and risking some protection because the bulk is getting to me. In summary, a great case for solid protection if you’re willing to sacrifice sleekness and aesthetics.

This Otterbox Case is Great for a Black iPhone 4S

I preordered a black iPhone 4S so that it would be delivered on the Oct. 14th release date of the iPhone 4S. Apple’s Customer Service representatives repeately assured me that the iPhone 4S is exactly the same on the outside as the older iPhone 4. I wanted to put a good case on the iPhone 4S when I received it, so I ordered in advance this universal Otterbox Defender case for the older iPhone 4, even though Otterbox’s website stated that their iPhone 4 Defender cases will not fit the new iPhone 4S. I suspect that Otterbox states this just to get you to pay more for their official iPhone 4S case, because the iPhone 4 universal Defender case fits the new iPhone 4S just fine. I agree with a previous reviewer that the ring/silent switch on the side of the iPhone is a little offset in the rectangular hole of the plastic frame of the case, but the switch is not blocked by the plastic frame at all. The other holes (for the camera lens, proximity sensor, speaker, etc.) in the case are aligned fine. Also, the hole at the top edge of the case is for the pinhole microphone, NOT the headphone jack. You’re supposed to access the headphone jack by lifting up the silicone flap that covers it.

FYI, the pinhole microphone is there to help the iPhone distinguish the difference between your voice on a phone call, and background noise that needs to be filtered out of phone conversations.

I think that this iPhone 4 case actually protects an iPhone 4S a little better than Otterbox’s official iPhone 4S case, because the front and back holes in the plastic frame of the iPhone 4S case is bigger than it needs to be.

I am surprised that an Oct 15, 2011 review stated that the iPhone 4 case does not fit the iPhone 4S. But I don’t work for Otterbox.

the Best case out there

I am ROUGH with phones. This is the best case around for the iPhone 4. I gave it 4 out of 5 only because the 3GS case was a little better. I know they could do better but chose to compromise a few ways to satisfy more buyers. I personally would have liked it to be water proof and have no ned for the silly apple logo to show through. TO me that sort of decor is a waste, but this IS the best iPhone 4 case. It will work with AT&T or Verizon. If it’s not the UNIVERSAL model it will NOT work with Verizon.

Awesome protection for my Verizon iPhone

I wear my cell phone on a utility belt with all the other equipment I use at work. The phone gets alot of abuse and needed some heavy duty protection. This case fit the bill to a T! This is a 3 piece case. You place your phone in a hard shell case that snaps together. The front of the hard shell has a built in screen protector. Then you place the hard shell in a silicon/rubber cover which adds shock absorbant protection to the rear, sides, and the front edges. The sleep, home, and volume buttons are covered by the silicon/rubber shell but have molded buttons to maintain the functionality of those buttons. The head phone jack, mute button, and docking area have silicon/rubber tabs which cover them to prevent dust from entering. These tabs can be lifted as needed to access the aforementioned. I read a previous review where the buyer complained that the hole on the headphone jack did not line up with the hole on the tab covering it. It is not supposed to. The hole in that tab is for the built in microphone, not the headphone jack. I had a front and rear skin protector on my Verizon iPhone 4. I removed the screen protector, since I did not need it, but kept the rear protector in place for extra protection. The phone still fit nicely in the hard shell case. The exterior shell also provides a very good grip.

This is a SUBSTANTIAL case! Not one for the shirt pocket. It does come with its own belt clip which holds the phone securely. This is not the case for you if you are constantly taking your phone out of its case to use a docking station. It will not fit with the case on and I would imagine taking the phone in and out of THIS case would get old quick! I have a Bose Sound Dock. I purchased a docking cable extension so I could use it with my phone in the case. The extension will also charge the phone. I did, however, lose all remote control functions except for volume control. There is a YouTube video from Otterbox which demonstrates the installation of the case if you want to get an idea of the protection this case provides.

This is the best protective case I have found for my Verizon iPhone 4. I would recommend it to anyone. I plan to purchase a couple as gifts for my brother and cousin. If you have an iPhone and are not paying for the protection plan you probably want this case on your iPhone. Unless you have $750 laying around for a full retail replacement. I would not recommend cancelling the protection plan if you have one though. The company that makes this case makes no claim that it is water proof. Water is an iPhone killer. But every waterproof case I have seen for an iPhone looks like an IV bag! Not something you would want to carry around with you unless you are a pool cleaner.

FITS THE IPHONE 4S!! save yourself some money :)

I had one of these on my iPhone 4 for over a year and loved it, so it seemed only natural to use one on my new 4S. Because the outside design is practically identical, I wasn’t falling for the blatant lies found on the otterbox website stating that the previous universal iPhone 4 defender case will not work with the iPhone 4S. It works perfectly, save your money, take advantage of your prime membership and get yourself one of these. I have (accidentally) dropped my phone from 20 feet and it cracked the case but saved the phone’s glass. My iPhone will never be without one.

Once again, this fits the latest iPhone 4S, I know this because I’m holding one installed in this otterbox right now!
